Common Lingerie Terms

·        Babydoll, a short nightgown or negligee intended as nightwear for women.

·        Basque, a tight, form-fitting bodice or coat

·        Bedjacket, worn over a nightgown or negligee for warmth and modesty.

·        Blanket sleeper, is a type of especially warm sleeping garment worn primarily during the winter in the United States and Canada. The garment is worn especially by infants and young children.

·        Bloomers, underpants with short legs.

·        Bodystocking, a unitard.

·        Bodysuit, a leotard-like undergarment, usually skintight or formfitting.

·        Bodice, covers the body from the neck to the waist.

·        Boy shorts, a style of panties, so named for their resemblance to male shorts.

·        Brassiere, is an article of clothing that covers, supports, and elevates the breasts

·        Bustier, : its primary purpose is to push up the bust by tightening against the upper midriff and forcing the breasts to move up, while gently shaping the waist.

·        Camisole, sleeveless and tight fitting, covering the top part of the body

·        Camiknickers, camisole and knickers joined as one garment

·        Chemise, The term chemise can refer to the classic smock or shift, or else can refer to certain modern types of women's undergarments and dresses.

·        Corset by bone, a bodice worn to mold and shape the torso.

·        Corselet = Brassiere + Girdle

·        Corsage by elastic, covering the body from the neck to the waist, similar to a corset.

·        Drawers a pant-like garment worn during the 19th century for modesty and warmth.   Some drawers were split-leg, in that the crotch seam was left open.

·        French maid, a form of ladies' fantasywear

·        G-String/Thong, a narrow piece of cloth passes between the buttocks, and is attached to a band around the hips, worn as a bikini bottom or as underwear by both men and women.

·        Garter, A garter is often worn by newlywed brides. It is the groom's privilege to remove the garter and toss it to the male guests. If a garter is not worn, a stocking is removed instead. The symbolism to deflowering is unambiguous.

·        Garter belt, used to keep stockings up

·        Girdle, resembles a tight pair of athletic shorts

·        Granny panties

·        Hosiery, Hosiery describes tight-fitting garments worn directly on the feet and legs.

·        Jersey nightshirt - A long, loose T-shirt made of cotton, polyester, nylon or diaphanous chiffon that can be worn like a Babydoll.

·        Leotard, A leotard is a skin-tight one-piece garment that covers the torso and body but leaves the legs free.

·        Naughty & Nice, A Naughty & Nice is a matching 3 piece ensemble consisting of panties, babydoll (short nightgown) and peignoir (long nightgown).

·        Negligee, is a form of womenswear intended for wear at night and in the bedroom.

·        Nightgown or Nightie, a loosely hanging item of nightwear, may vary from hip-length (babydoll) to floor-length (peignoir).

·        Nightshirt, A nightshirt is a special kind of shirt used in sleeping.

·        Panties, A wide variety of types of panties exist Bikini panties are designed so that the hip connectors are small, like on those of swimwear. String bikini are similar to regular bikini panties, but instead of a thin hip grip, they have a small string, which sometimes ties around the waist rather than being pulled up over them. String bikinis are considered more revealing. String bikinis are usually made of satin or silk, but occasionally from other fabrics. High-cut, or control top, are cut higher on the hip to slightly pull in and shape the stomach to conceal obesity. High-cut are usually worn by older women and are often shunned by younger women. Boyshorts describe a type of female underwear that has a lower, thicker cut of material around the hips, making them appear as shorts that men would wear. They are sometimes by men and women alike criticized as not being feminine, although some women do wear them. The g-string is a thong panty with a string running between the buttocks. It is often jokingly referred to as "floss" by critics and some comedians.

·        Peignoir, A peignoir is a long outer garment for women usually sheer and made of chiffon. Peignoirs are usually sold with matching nightgown, negligee or panties but are often worn with no underwear.

·        Petticoat, A petticoat or underskirt is an article of clothing for women; specifically an undergarment to be worn under a skirt, dress or sari. The petticoat is a separate garment hanging from the waist (unlike the chemise).

·        Pettipants, Pettipants are similar to long shorts, though they may be made from material such as cotton and lace, and usually have ruffles down each leg. They are available in different lengths up to knee length.

·        Robe, a robe is a loose-fitting outer garment. A robe is distinguished from a cape or cloak by the fact that it usually has sleeves. The English word robe is borrowed from French, although in French it typically refers to a woman's dress

·        Slip (Full slip and Half slip / Underskirt)

·        Spanky-Pants, "Spankies" (color-coordinated underpants worn by cheerleaders)

·        Stockings, A stocking is a close-fitting, variously elastic garment covering the foot and lower part of the leg. By analogy, the term is also used to describe a type of horse marking in which the white coloring extends from the horse's hoof to just above the knee.

·        Tanga, A tanga is an undergarment and swimwear for both sexes which has no material around the sides other than the waist band. A string tanga is a type of tanga swimwear which has the waist band replaced with strings which are tied. The term originated from the Kimbundu term "ntanga", meaning loincloth.

·        Tap Pants, tap pants are a form of lingerie worn exclusively by women. It is also known by the names of French knickers, side-cut shorts, and dance shorts. As the name implies, they are a type of shorts, in that they cover the pelvic area and the upper part of the upper legs.

·        Teddy, A teddy is a form of bodysuit-like lingerie, often worn in the boudoir. By definition, a teddy is an undergarment which combines a camisole and panty in one piece. Unlike a bodysuit, it is typically looser and more sheer, and may be designed to slip off from the shoulders, rather than to open at the crotch. The teddy is normally worn for the seductive look, rather than practical reasons.

·        Undergarment, undergarments, also called "underwear", "underpants," "lingerie", or "panties" (undergarments for women), or sometimes "intimate clothing", and "pants" or "knickers" in British English, are clothes worn next to the skin, usually under other clothes. They are also known as 'Katch' or 'Katchie' and worn under Indian traditional clothing.
